युगानुयुगे वाहणाऱ्या मुळा आणि मुठा या नद्या पुरातन सह्याद्रीच्या पठारावरून महाराष्ट्राच्या मैदानी प्रदेशात सुबत्ता आणि ज्ञान/समृद्धी घेऊन येतात. हिमालय पर्वत आणि गंगा यांच्यापेक्षा सुमारे सहा कोटी वर्ष पुरातन असणाऱ्या ह्या सहयाद्रीच्या पर्वतरांगा,यांनी इतिहासपूर्व काळापासून ते आधुनिक शहरांच्या निर्मिती पर्यंत सर्व काही पहिले आहे.

मराठ्यांची राणी म्हणवून घेणारी मुठा,शहराच्या मध्यभागातून वाहताना सौंदर्य आणि समृद्धीचा मिलाप दाखवते. तिचं स्थिर,निश्चयी आणि उग्र स्वरूप मराठ्यांच्या महान काळाची आठवण करून देतं. नव्या शहरांपासून थोडं दूर असलेल्या,जुन्या शहराच्या कडेनं वळणं घेणाऱ्या मुळा नदीला एखाद्या जंगलात फिरणाऱ्या कुमारिकेची उपमा दिली जाते.

जन्म / मूळ

प्रेमाने ‘मुठाई’ – याचा अर्थ मराठीत ‘आई मुठा’ म्हणतात, मुठा नदी पश्चिम घाटात वेग्रे नावाच्या गावात उगम पावते. मुळा नदीचा उगम मुळशीतील हिरवीगार वनराई असलेल्या पवित्र मुळेश्वर देवराई येथे होतो. मुळेश्वर किंवा शिव मंदिराजवळ एक लहान टाकी नदीचे उगमस्थान म्हणून ओळखल्या जाणार्‍या लहान प्रवाहाचे संरक्षण करते. या दोन्ही नद्यांचे स्त्रोत विविध प्रजातींच्या वनस्पती, औषधी वनस्पती आणि चित्तवेधक /मोहक पक्ष्यांसाठी समृद्ध नैसर्गिक निवासस्थान आहेत.

पौराणिक मूळ

नदीची कथा गजानक नावाच्या राजाच्या काळातील आहे,जो सह्याद्रीच्या पर्वतरांगांमध्ये तपश्चर्यासाठी बसला होता. यामुळे देवांचा राजा इंद्र असुरक्षित झाला. मग राजाची तपश्चर्या भंग करण्यासाठी त्याने दोन अप्सरांना पृथ्वीवर पाठवले. अप्सरांवर संतप्त झालेल्या गजानकाने त्यांना शाप देऊन पुण्यातून वाहणाऱ्या मुळा आणि मुठा अशा नद्यांमध्ये रूपांतरित केले. नंतर त्यांना सांगितले की जेव्हा त्या भीमा नदीला भेटण्यासाठी खाली वाहून जातील तेव्हा त्यांना मोक्ष मिळू शकेल.

Panshet Dam Primarily built for irrigation in the late 1950s on the Ambi river 50 kms south-west of Pune it provides drinking water to the city.

Also called Tanajisagar dam, it burst in its first year of storing water in 1961 because of total absence of RCC strengthening. It caused massive flooding in the city resulting in loss of life and property.
